Tips on presenting
a good workshop

.. Keep it simple, make it fun

.. Break up your presentation with a variety of formats:

.. * Use slides to illustrate, not dominate, your story;

.. * Pass around pieces of equipment or special clothing for hands-on visuals;

.. * Point out places on locator maps;

.. * Post elevation maps or other charts;

.. * Have handouts ready for before, during or after the presentation.

.. Good things to share include where to get more information; how to get permits; where to find relevant Web pages; where and how to get resupplied, etc.

.. Explain new things in relation to common experiences.

.. * For example: How does the John Doe Trail compare/contrast with the Appalachian Trail? Similar terrain? Shelters? Supply points? Equipment?

.. Leave a little time for people to mingle afterward and shy folks to ask questions.

.. Be ready to start your program when your time begins; be ready to empty the room when your time is up so next presenter can have time to set up.

.. Above all, keep it simple, make it fun!

WORKSHOP IDEAS
24th Annual Gathering
Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H.
Oct. 7-9, 2005

If you have any ideas for a workshop that you’d like to present at the 2005 Gathering, by all means let us know. We’re always looking for new ideas. We also encourage new presenters to come forward for popular trails that have been done in the recent past, so we can get a different perspective on that trail.

It always helps to have as many viewpoints as possible, and fresh perspectives from more recent hikers are more valuable for folks who want to hike, say, the Long Trail next year than presentations based on trips from 5 or more years ago.

So, if there’s something you’re burning to share with fellow hikers, we’re interested. The program coordinator for the 2005 Gathering is Bill O'Brien. You can e-mail him at aldha at aol dot com.

The Gathering is a little earlier this year, so the deadline for submitting your proposal and getting on the program is Sept. 1, 2005. But act now in case someone else steals your idea!

To let us know what you would like to do for a workshop, please print out this form, fill it out and mail it to us at the following address:
