What’s New

Latest updates: April 14

Welcome to ALDHA’s home page. As with any home page,
this site is often updated with new roads, walkways and paths.
Here’s what’s new:

2013 Spring LDH Week ending April 7, 2013 ...

  • There are two versions of the spring newsletter that you can download online here. One is 11x17 and shows the pages as they would appear if you had them open in front of you in printed format. It is ideal if you are just reading the newsletter on your computer screen. That version can be downloaded from this link.

The other version is laid out on 8 1/2 by 11 standard-size pages, suitable for printing at home. That version can be downloaded from this link.

To download these files, right click on the link and hit "save link as" or "save file as." They are about 6 MB in file size, but once downloaded to your computer you should have no problem opening them in Acrobat Reader (a free program). Trying to open them straight from these links will likely blow out some fonts and wildly distort the colors for some reason.

CORRECTION: An error in a date in the coordinator's report on Page 2 has been fixed in the E-edition above. For print subscribers, the date of the ATC Biennial in Cullowhee, N.C., is July 19-26.

    Week ending March 1, 2013 ...

  • The Membership Directory should be in your hands by now. They were printed and mailed in a matter of a couple of days during the first week of February, so if you haven't gotten yours by the end of next week, contact the membership secretary. Remember, they are mailed via bulk rate shipping, so the Postal Service gives them very low priority. All digital subscribers of the Directory should have gotten the link to the PDF in an email over a week ago. Read about this year's booklet here, and see what the cover looks like this year.

  • New dates and all fresh links have been added to the list of 2013 Trail Festivals, along with a color version of the photo that graced the cover of the winter newsletter.

    Week ending Feb. 9, 2013 ...

  • The 2013 "A.T. Thru-Hikers' Companion" is in the mail and in most cases has already been delivered for all those who preordered a hard copy from The Ultimate Trail Store of ATC. Also, copies of the digital version are available for sale right now. Visit the Digital Companion page for details on how to get your Companion in PDF format. Or check out The ALDHA Store if you want to buy a hard copy through ALDHA.

  • And speaking of "on the way," the 2013 Membership Directory listing all members of ALDHA with their trail names, addresses, email addresses, etc., is on the way to the printers this week, so you should be getting your copy sometime this month.

    Week ending Jan. 19, 2013 ...

  • The 2013 "Thru-Hikers' Companion," our 20th edition!, is being printed and prepared for delivery right now, but copies of the digital version are available for sale right now. Visit the Digital Companion page for details on how to get your Companion in PDF format.

ALDHA member Leon Barkman has died
    (Posted Sept. 26)

  • 37th person to thru-hike the AT . . . Leon Barkman of Newtown, Conn., passed away on the Autumnal Equinox after a brief illness with pneumonia. Born in Port Jervis, NY, Leon was a biology professor at Housatonic Community College for thirty years.
His education included Rockland Community College, Arizona State University at Flagstaff, Syracuse University and the University of Bridgeport for a second master’s degree.
He was a veteran of the Army serving in the Alaskan tank corps.
He was the 37th to hike the Appalachian Trail, a 2,024 mile trail from Georgia to Maine. He hiked 113 mountains over 4,000 feet in the northeast. Every Dec 28, Mount Marcy, a 5000 ft. mountain in NY was a favorite destination with his wife, Patricia, his nephew, Dave and friends, Bruce and Susan. He biked with his nephew, Lee, across the country, west to east coast.
He hiked all 49 high peaks in contiguous U.S. His favorite birding companion was his nephew, Scott. He was an avid tennis player. He won men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles in Newtown tournaments several times. He ran the Boston Marathon twice. A full-page photo in Runner’s World captured his participation. Even into his 80’s Leon enjoyed a pick-up game of basketball, hiking, biking or playing tennis.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Newtown Public Library where Leon liked to read and where he put together his bird jigsaw puzzle that his sisters, Anne, Ruth and Rebecca gave him for his 80th birthday. He was able to pass on his wisdom and wit to his grandnephews, Jake and Connor. His family life was enriched by Marybeth and Marj, two thoughtful, caring women as well as his wife’s family who loved him very much.
The Memorial service will take place at the tennis courts in Dickinson Town Park on Elm Drive in Newtown, Wednesday, September 26 at 2:00 p.m.
This informal memorial will honor Leon and the life he loved. Please wear white to remember his many days on the tennis court. Bring chairs or blankets for hillside seating (nothing to mar the tennis court), and most importantly bring happy memories of all the times that we had together.

It would have been wonderful to see Bill O'Brien, Dr. David Gwinn, Mary
Ann Nissley and other End to Enders that I have met over the years.

FAREWELL, FRIEND: This week we received some sad news on the death of Buck Kanoy, one-half of "Bucky and the Bearcharmer" of Thomasville, N.C. Here's the message we received from his wife, Sue, aka "Bearcharmer" ...

    Dear friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I send this. Tragedy struck me and my family Sunday afternoon. My beloved Bucky was killled in a tractor accident. Our hearts are broken; remember us in your thoughts and prayers. Somewhere along the way we shared time with each one of you, and Bucky and I always treasured those times.

We have some wonderful memories. Thanks.

    Love to you all,
    Sue

Note: Buck and Sue compiled an impressive resume of trails -- the A.T., John Muir Trail, Long Trail, Colorado Trail, Wonderland Trail, Bartram Trail, the Foothills Trail -- some of which they first learned about and were inspired to tackle while attending ALDHA Gatherings. They were almost always seen in unison. "Bucky and Bearcharmer" just couldn't be separated. So it will seem strange and feel sad as we are left with the void of his absence at this year's Gathering. But he will be there in spirit. In the past, we have dedicated our fall get-together to members who passed on during the previous year, from Ed Garvey to Bill Foot, Ann McDuff and Larry McDuff, John O'Mahoney and Warren Doyle Sr., and, of course, Walkin' Jim Stoltz. So, in keeping with this long-standing tradition, we will dedicate this, the 30th anniversary Gathering, to the memory of "Bucky" Kanoy. Join us in wishing Sue and her family our sympathy and condolences on their -- and our -- loss.

    -- Bill O'Brien
