Location
The 265 mile Long Trail's northern terminus is on the US/Canadian border at Line Post 592 near North Troy, Vt. It's southern border is at the Vermont/Massachusetts border on the Appalachian Trail.
Description
The Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail run concurrently for approximately one hundred miles, from the Massachusetts border to Maine Junction just north of Vermont Route 4. From Maine Junction the Long Trail continues north along the crest of the Green Mountains to the Canadian
border. Trail highlights include Stratton Mountain (where Benton MacKaye conceived the idea of a trail along the crest of the Appalachians), the Lincoln ridge, Camels Hump, and the highest point in Vermont at Mount Mansfield. The Long Trail is marked by 2" x 6" white blazes, and is maintained by volunteers of the Green Mountain Club.
When to Go
Most hikers avoid winter conditions. Some sections should also be avoided during spring mud season to avoid damage to the trailway.
