Location
The southern terminus of the Long Path is located in Fort Lee, NJ, at the west end of the George Washington Bridge. The northern terminus is located in Thatcher State Park outside of Albany, NY.
Description
The Long Path follows a north south route that crosses the Palisades, Harriman State Park, the Shawagunks, the Catskills, and the Schoharie Ridge. The Shawagunk Ridge Trail provides an official detour to avoid the lowlands of Orange County, detouring around long road walks and
private property limitations (no camping), by heading northwest to pick up the Appalachian Trail in High Point State Park in NJ, and following the AT into Harriman State Park in NY. Highlights include extensive views from the Palisades and the Shawagunks. The trail also crosses nine of the Catskill peaks, including the highest at Slide Mountain. The trail is marked along most of its distance by 2"x4" turquoise blazes. Future plans include extending the trail to the Mohawk
River and on to the Adirondacks.
When to Go
Since much of the trail runs along high, dry ridges water may be a problem in late summer. Most of the sections crossing private land are closed to all hikers during large game season.
Permits and Restrictions
Most sections crossing private property are closed to camping.
Resupply
Supplies are available in several small towns near the route.
