John O’Mahoney, 1946-2008
Our longtime recording secretary, John O’Mahoney, has passed away after a battle with lung cancer. He volunteered to take minutes at the 1999 Gathering in Hanover, N.H., when no one else was able to, and he cheerily took on the job for the next several years, finally stepping down at last fall’s Gathering in Gettysburg. He was one of two people to whom the 2008 ALDHA Directory was dedicated. He organized two of our Gatherings in Hanover, and after the first one, was caught in a rare speechless moment when we presented him with a “game ball” -- a baseball signed by board members on behalf of ALDHA thanking him for his work. A die-hard Yankees fan, Navy veteran of Vietnam, Boy Scout volunteer, retired cop, scion of a legendary Wyoming senator, proud family man and one of ALDHA’s biggest boosters, John will be sorely missed. We are putting together an online tribute to “JohnO” and welcome all contributions, thoughts, photos, etc. Send them to us at aldha@aldha.org.
