Practical Advice from Hundreds
of Women Long Distance Hikers

Beverly Hugo
“Maine Rose”

“Women & Thru-Hiking on the Appalachian Trail: Practical Advice from Hundreds of Women Long-Distance Hikers” by the late Beverly “Maine Rose” Hugo was the result of a 2˝-year project. The author was a 1995 A.T. thru-hiker who went northbound solo for seven months and was one of five hikers featured on the Trailside series by Backpacker Magazine that aired on public television. Rose also did several presentations at ATC and ALDHA meetings.

Rose believed her book would be a tremendous help for women contemplating long hikes as well as for the men who may accompany them. If you are a woman A.T. hiker, you may recognize the contributions from other women you have met on the trail or at trail functions. You yourself may even have your thoughts and comments there.

Topics include the before, during and after process of thru-hiking the A.T., sections on safety, hygiene, hiking solo vs. with a partner, hitchhiking, mental and physical preparation, leaving loved ones, communication, lifestyle changes, animal encounters, dealing with the elements, self-esteem and self-image issues, weight changes and muscle development, motivation, goal setting, and dealing with injuries, illness and PMS.

Her book is available from www.amazon.com. Sadly, Rose died in 2001 from brain cancer at the age of 54. But her book continues to help other women hikers follow in her footsteps.
