Virtual tour of
Gettysburg College

The campus of Gettysburg College was tailor-made for an ALDHA Gathering. Anyone who has driven through the center of town might wonder about that, but the campus is far enough away from the commercial district that it’s totally insulated from the tourist traps.

It’s a classic college layout, with open spaces and tree-lined walkways in between beautifully designed architectural gems. There’s plenty of grassy lawn to stretch out on on a sunny day. And the classroom buildings we’ll be using are all concentrated in one corner of campus, near the Student Union Ballroom [inset], which will serve as “ALDHA Central” and will also house the Hiker Fair and all evening programs.

This is near the corner of campus where we’ll be walking
between buildings. Pennsylvania Hall is on the left.

The centerpiece of the campus is Pennsylvania Hall, Gettysburg’s main administrative building. It was built in 1837 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Hall began service as a hospital for the wounded of both sides. More than 600 Confederate casualties were treated inside the building.

This walkway leads to Breidenbaugh Hall, one of the class buildings we’ll be using. The state-of-the-art library is on the left; Pennsylvania Hall on far right. In the foreground is the rim around the fountain, which may be running when we meet here in October.

The Ballroom in the College Union Building will accommodate all our evening programs, as well as the Hiker Fair, ALDHA’s registration desk and the contra dance.
