New shelter to be built
in memory of Ann McDuff
Posted March 5, 2003
The Nantahala Hiking Club is planning to build a new trail shelter on the A.T. near the junction with the Bartram Trail, just north of Wayah Bald in North Carolina. It will be situated about halfway between Siler Bald Shelter and Cold Spring Shelter. The shelter is in the planning stages and is currently under review by the U.S. Forest Service for the necessary permits.
It will be built in memory of Ann McDuff, an A.T. thru-hiker who was killed earlier this year in a tragic bicycle accident near her home in Alabama.
Contributions to help move this project along may be sent to the Appalachian Trail Conference, P.O. Box 807, Harpers Ferry, W.Va. 25425. Be sure to mark your contribution for the shelter to be built in memory of Ann.
About $6,000 is still needed to bring this project to fruition, so all donations, large and small, will be greatly appreciated.
On a related note, there will be an informal memorial service at Damascus Trail Days for Ann McDuff and for other hikers who have passed away during the past year. It will take place on Sunday, May 18, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the Rock School Auditorium in Damascus, Va.
Please contact Bill OBrien [bobrien@aldha.org] if you would like to take part in this program. Impromptu remarks, recollections and remembrances of Ann are most welcome. Musical tributes are especially encouraged.
