A Checklist of Things to Bring
(Or At Least Be Aware Of)
Don’t forget these things when packing for the Gathering, which is Oct. 9-11, 2009, at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania:
1) Your best trail photos to enter in our annual Photo Contest. Click here for details on what to submit.
2) A few of your state’s best apples, to go up against the apples from other states in our annual Apple Contest. Bring them to the Hiker Fair Saturday morning to enter. Make sure they’re tagged with your name and state.
3) Gently used or new items you’d like to donate to the Silent Auction of the Appalachian Trail Museum. Give them to Larry Luxenberg during the day Friday or drop them off at the Hiker Fair Saturday morning.
4) Photos of folks you’d like to be remembered during the weekend, for our Memorial Wall of past ALDHA members no longer with us or unable to attend.
5) Your trail-inspired creations, whether they be songs, poems, journal entries, a piece of artwork, etc., if you plan on attending “The Muse Schmooze” with Walkin’ Jim Stoltz, an informal sharing of the creative spirit on Sunday afternoon.
6) Speaking of creativity, bring your best trail story for the Ed Garvey Memorial Storytelling Contest. The person whose story is deemed best by your peers will receive a prize that is Garvey Approved.
7) Hiking sticks, boots or good walkin’ shoes, fanny packs or daypacks, water, bandana, sunhat, sunscreen, etc., if you plan on going out for one of two Battlefield Hikes during the weekend. Saturday’s will be in the early evening, so you won’t need sunscreen.
8) Your signature rubber stamp if you are into letterboxing, or geocaching, and your notepad for collecting other rubber stamps. We hope to have a special stamp commemorating the Gettysburg Gathering and will share others’ stamps during a workshop on letterboxing.
9) CUP. If you want some complementary coffee from the ALDHA urn at the registration desk on Saturday morning, B.Y.O.C.
10) Earplugs, just in case your campground neighbor saws wood in his sleep.
